Tax Refunds
Taxation July 8th, 2007You have already filed your tax refund, now you want to check on its status. The fastest way you can do this is by logging on to www.irs.gov or by calling Refund Hotline at (800) 829-1954. You will have to be ready with the following information: your Social Security Number (or IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number); your filing status [Single, Married Filing Joint Return, Married Filing Separate Return, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow(er)], and the exact refund amount shown on your return. You have to be aware though that you cannot get information unless it has been 6 weeks since you’ve filed your tax reduction or 3 weeks for those who file electronically.
www.irs.gov can give you an acknowledgment that your return was received and that it is being processed. You can also get information on the mailing date or direct deposit date of your refund. The site can also guide you through the problems affecting your tax refund, using information unique to your situation. There are links available that can help you through the whole procedure.
There are some people who are not qualified for a tax refund. Among these are taxpayers who are delinquent in their payments of loans, taxes and child support. They are prohibited by law, state and federal agencies from receiving their tax refunds. Tax refunds due them will be used to pay their other debts.
There is a way by which you can receive your refund faster. You can do this by depositing it directly to your bank. Aside from the benefit of getting your refund faster, you also get the advantage of a more secure payment. There is no danger of your check getting lost and you will not have to go the bank to deposit the check. You will have to be sure though that the financial institution you are affiliated to will accept your direct deposit. The institution may not allow joint refunds to be deposited into one individual account. You can get helpful information available through the IRS Publication 17 or your Federal Income Tax. You can get your copy by visiting the Forms and Publications section of www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).
An even faster way to get your tax refund is by using e-file. You will get your tax refund half the time it would take those who are filing through paper returns.
Don’t just sit around and wait for your tax refund. Act now.
